3 weeks!

Riley's list of accomplishments at 3 weeks:
  • She is one noisy baby!  She does not cry much at all, but she makes the cutest noises when she's sleeping, and when she's awake, and when she's eating, and... all the time.  Her eating noises are the funniest, and I would take a video of it so you can hear them, but that might be a little... awkward. :)  She also makes these little tiny squeaks when she's sleeping that are so very cute.  And of course every time I try to get a video of it, she goes quiet.  Go figure.
  • Smiles: same as last week pretty much, she smiles a lot when sleeping, and I know smiles at this age are supposed to be all gas-related, BUT she smiles in response to me touching her face sometimes (when she's sleeping).  So who knows.
  • Two words: Poop.  Machine.  We have a rule around here.. Whoever has the baby when she poops has to change her.  Except seeing how I change all diapers during the night (average of 4), Mark has been kind enough to change some of "my" diapers for me.  Funny thing is, Riley must know when daddy is changing her, because she saves her big blowouts for him, and at least half the time she pees while he is changing her.  That's love.
  • Tummy time has begun!  We kind of did it a little from the start mostly with her just lying flat on one of us, but we didn't actively do tummy time until this week.  Her neck muscles are pretty strong though already!
  • Eating is going very well, she's gaining weight and breast feeding is becoming more efficient, so all is well!  Still working on mastering eating while lying down, but that's alright.  She eats every 3 hours on average, and each feed lasts an average of 30 minutes.  Much better than the hour it was taking before!
  • She now is up to 7 pounds 14 ounces, so she's gained 14 ounces in the last 2 weeks.  In a day or two she should be up to 8 pounds!
  • When she's awake, she's really taking it all in!  She loves staring at faces, and she's starting to take interest in the mobiles on her swing/bouncy seat (that is, when she will actually sit in them).
  • Sleeping: Still mostly in my arms, but she's getting a little less fussy about sleeping on her own.  She also will sleep in her car seat in the house after we've been out for a drive, but I don't like to do that too often.
 Some funny quirks
  • Wrinkles: when she is waking up, or sometimes just randomly while she's sleeping, she raises her eyebrows and gets like 10 little wrinkles on her forehead.
  • She gets mad when she gets a pacifier instead of milk when she's hungry, and she hooks her little fingers under it and flicks it out of her mouth with quite a lot of force!
  • When she's really hungry or worked up, and we try and give her a pacifier (or a booby), she will open her mouth super wide, and then shake her head vigorously back and forth about 4 or 5 times before settling it into her mouth. Mark saw her doing this with the pacifier and wanted to show me, and I reassured him that I knew that movement all too well, thankyouverymuch. :)
  • She loves to have her hands by her face.  She falls asleep and somehow her hands always make it up right by her face and stay there until she wakes up.
  • When she gets mad, she straightens her legs and locks her knees.  Or, she kicks and kicks and kicks... this can make diaper changing quite challenging, but sort of funny.
  • After we bathe her, her hair becomes SO soft and fuzzy, and it sticks straight out.  Super cute
Also, today we introduced Riley to the bottle!!  It was a bottle of breast milk, and the idea is, if we introduce her to the occasional bottle now, that she will take it easily when she's older and I'm not always around.  I wasn't sure when exactly to introduce the bottle, since they say it can lead to nipple confusion, but since we're doing really well with breast feeding, I figured it might be okay to try it now.  Plus Mark has been DYING to feed her.  So, I looked up all these tips and tricks to get newborns to take a bottle, and the worry was all for nothing, as she took it no problem!  She drank about 2 ounces from Daddy, and was happy as can be!  Now our plan is to give her a bottle maybe every other day, just so she gets accustomed to it, but still she will mostly eat straight from me.
And kisses for mommy (or looking for more milk...)
