Hard to believe this little monkey is one month old already! That means the beginning of his monthly photos! I want to do his photo on this pottery barn chair every month to see how he changes (although Riley was not totally happy about us borrowing her chair)... One photo will be the whole chair so we can compare his size, and then one will be a close-up of his precious little face... Ya know, in addition to the hundred other photos I take.
Here's what he's up to these days. Two words: Growth. Spurt. The last few days have been his second growth spurt, so lots of eating, less sleeping. Although it sometimes seems like the last 4 weeks have just been one big long growth spurt. Over the last week or so he's fallen into a bit of a sleep pattern. He has his most awake time in the morning, and consistently sleeps long stretches in the late afternoon and early evening. Like 3+ hour stretches.
Yes I do realize this wrap is rather purple and maybe a bit girly, but oh well.
He loves bath time in the big bath floating in the nice warm water, and gets SO calm and happy afterwards. About a week ago he started to get pretty bad baby acne, and it started by his nose/cheeks, and has moved to his forehead and behind his ears and pretty much all over his head. His face looks heaps better, but the back of his head and behind his ears still looks pretty bad! It's caused by hormones and will go away on its own, hopefully sooner rather than later! Riley never had any skin problems so this is all new to me!
Feeding: He eats a lot in the mornings... seems to want to eat every hour and a half to 2 hours. In the afternoon and early evening I usually get a couple of 3 hour stretches, but I would say on average he eats every 2 hours... even through the night. And of course, all bets are off during a growth spurt (now). He's usually done in 20 minutes, but that's only if we don't get interrupted by big sister and have to stop halfway to tend to her... then obviously it takes longer! We have zero problems or issues breastfeeding, it's great!
Sleeping: In the morning he can be challenging to get to sleep (especially since he seems to want to eat so frequently). He usually requires being held or rocked or a car ride to get to sleep. It actually works sort of nicely since Riley's activities are in the morning, which usually involve a car ride or him being in the MOBY wrap, where he will sleep quite soundly. He will also sleep in his rock 'n play but might require a bit of constant rocking. He prefers lots of noise... music, or TV in the background, or white noise, or big sister yelling. :) He sleeps pretty soundly in the later afternoon/early evening almost every day. Night time sleep is not so good yet... for some reason, he has spent a lot of time awake in the middle of the night. The past few nights the only way I could get him (and me) to sleep was by letting him fall asleep while nursing in the side-lying position in bed with me. I couldn't sneak him back in his bed, he was having none of it!
Awake time: He's spending more time awake, although it's hit or miss whether he's happy in his awake time. Sometimes he's got some tummy troubles and is not a happy little boy. Other times he's totally content to sit and take in the world around him. He loves looking at us, and actually really loves to look at Riley. We're trying to get him time under his play gym, but it's a bit of a battle to keep Riley out of it! When we hold him upright he can hold his head up for a really long time. He doesn't mind tummy time, and will lift his head up and move it from side to side, but gets tired pretty quickly. It's fun to see him focus on our faces and track us with his eyes.
Size: My little man weighs over 9 pounds (he weighed 9 pounds exactly 2 days ago so I'm sure he's slightly heavier now), which means over the last 10 days he gained 1 pound, 10 ounces!! Holy cow! At one month, Riley only weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces, and she was a pound heavier than him at birth!! This little guy likes his milk, that's for sure. He's outgrowing his newborn onesies and sleepers, although he still fits in a bunch... Baby clothes are sized so randomly sometimes. We've graduated to some 0-3 month clothes, but they are still pretty big on him. He still fits in his newborn diapers, although we are almost out of them so we've been using size 1 diapers as well. I think he'll fit in those for quite a while! I think he's about 21 inches now.
Likes: He likes being held upright against my chest with his legs tucked up. He likes motion- car rides, being walked in the stroller, worn in the moby, the sling, rocking in his rock 'n play. He sometimes likes his paci. He likes being warm and wrapped up in soft blankets. He likes sleeping on his side or his tummy, or on an incline. He likes being sung and read (or talked) to. He likes lots of noise. He likes warm baths where he gets to be submerged and floating.
Dislikes: Laying flat on his back, cold baby wipes on his little bottom, the process of being strapped into his car seat, being force fed a paci by his sister, having to wait for food for more than 2 seconds, being cold at all.
I have not been able to catch the elusive smile on camera... I've been trying so hard and I just can't quite get it! I've gotten a little tiny sleepy smile on camera, but that's it! I also want to get his cute little cooing voice on camera but haven't been able to get that either. We have also nicknamed him the little baby goat because of the noises he makes when he's sleeping. He literally bleats just like a goat. I know Riley did not make those noises when she was a newborn!
Happy one month to my little monkey!
