Sleep training update

Apologies in advance for lots of words, few pictures.  Today wasn't a very picture-taking kind of day.

Some of you might not care at all about our sleep training adventures, but on the other hand, some of you might, so I'll share anyway.  Last night Riley fell asleep around 8:30ish, and slept soundly, without a peep until 12:15.  At that point I fed her, and put her straight back in her crib.  She cried for 3 minutes, I went in, she cried for 5 minutes, I went in, and she was asleep before the 7 minute check.  She slept until just after 5am, at which point I fed her.  She fell asleep after I fed her, but woke as soon as I put her in her crib.  Now I knew she needed more sleep, but 5am is a weird/tough time for her to fall asleep, so we decided to get her up for the day rather than let her cry at this point.  She was happy enough, although I could tell she's very tired, and her voice is SO raspy and sad sounding. :(

She was really tired by 7am, so I tried to put her down for a nap.  She SCREAMED for 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 7 minutes, and fell asleep 2 minutes later.  And woke up 2 minutes after that.  And then fell back asleep at 7:17am.  And she napped in her crib until 8:00, so 43 minutes. HUGE success.  Nap number two was sort of similar.  Put her in there a little before 10:15, she screamed for 3 minutes, then 5 minutes, fell asleep before the 7 minute check, woke briefly and screamed some more, and then was out by 10:25. She slept until 11:30.  Her newest thing though (which I'm not a huge fan of) is sleeping literally face down on the mattress.  Like mouth and nose squished into the mattress.  She usually turns her head after a few minutes, but it still freaks me out and I keep checking to make sure she's breathing!
So then her third nap of the day was even better, she fell asleep after 4 minutes of crying.  BUT, she only slept for 40 minutes and she was clearly still so tired, and she fell asleep while I was nursing her and I just let her stay asleep... with a pacifier... hopefully this wasn't a bad decision!!  She slept another hour that way, which was much needed sleep.  And even after that she was still SOO tired, and was ready for bed pretty early, but we tried to keep her up a little bit later in hopes of her sleeping a little later tomorrow morning (maybe?).  Anyway, she ended up in her bed at 7pm, cried for 5 minutes, 8 minutes, and was asleep 2 minutes later at about 7:20pm.  So we'll see how it goes tonight!  Overall, so far we've been having much more success that I ever imagined.  But she needs to sleep more total hours in a day because she was just so tired today!  It was hard work keeping her happy and entertained.  It meant getting on the floor with her and getting eyes poked and hair pulled... anything to keep the tired baby happy.

Wish us luck and continued success with sleep training!

Hope everything continues to go good. Sleep training is good thing, but it is hard. Sounds like she is doing great though.

Thanks for the updates - I for one do really appreciate them as we're going through the same sort of thing at the moment! Not sure if we will do the controlled crying thing - we're having pretty good success with patting and shushing leaning over our bub in the cot, so far at least. But it's great to know exactly what you're doing and how it's working. Good luck and hope your nerves hold out!
